FAQs

How do beneficial bacteria actually work?

PurePond bacteria work by breaking down organic waste and excess nutrients in the water, including:

  • ammonia
  • nitrite and nitrate
  • organic sludge
  • uneaten feed and debris

By reducing these nutrients, we remove the root cause of algae growth, allowing the water to naturally stabilise and clear.

This is a biological process, not a chemical reaction.

Will this kill algae instantly?

No.

Our bacteria do not act like chemical algaecides.

Instead, they:

  • reduce the nutrients algae depend on
  • improve overall water balance

As conditions improve, algae gradually decline and water clarity increases.

This approach is:

  • safer for fish and plants
  • more sustainable long-term
  • prevents recurring algae blooms

How long does it take to see results?

This depends on the pond condition.

Typical timeline:

  • 24–72 hours: odour reduction, initial clarity improvement
  • 1–2 weeks: visible reduction in algae, improved water balance
  • 2–4 weeks: stable, clear water system

Heavily polluted ponds may take longer due to higher nutrient loads.

Why does my pond keep turning green?

Green water is caused by excess nutrients, not just algae itself.

Common sources include:

  • overfeeding fish
  • accumulated sludge
  • leaves and organic debris
  • fertiliser runoff
  • poor circulation or low oxygen

If nutrients remain high, algae will always return—even after treatment.

Our bacteria address the cause, not just the symptom.

Do I need to remove algae before using it?

Not required, but strongly recommended for faster results.

If there is heavy algae:

  • removing excess algae reduces nutrient recycling
  • allows bacteria to work more efficiently

For light algae, you can dose directly.

How often should I apply the bacteria?

We recommend a two-stage approach:

Initial treatment: double dosage to make sure the good bacteria dominate the ecosystem (competitive exclusive principles)

Maintenance: dose 5-10mL/1000L every fortnightly

Consistency is important to establish a stable microbial ecosystem.

Can I use this with other pond treatments?

Avoid using with:

  • copper-based algaecides
  • chlorine or disinfectants
  • strong oxidising chemicals

These will kill beneficial bacteria.

Compatible with:

  • aeration systems
  • filtration systems
  • aquatic plants

What if I don’t see results?

Performance depends on system conditions.

Common limiting factors:

  • low oxygen (poor aeration)
  • excessive nutrient input
  • incorrect dosing
  • very heavy sludge accumulation

If results are slow:

  • increase aeration
  • reduce feeding or nutrient input
  • remove excess debris
  • do partial water change
  • adjust dosage

We can also assist with site-specific recommendations.

Is this safe for fish, plants, and humans?

Yes.

Our products are:

  • non-toxic
  • environmentally friendly
  • safe for fish, plants, pets, and wildlife

They are based on naturally occurring beneficial microorganisms.

Does this replace filtration or plants?

No.

Best results come from a complete ecosystem approach:

  • bacteria → break down waste
  • plants → absorb nutrients
  • aeration → support biological activity

Our bacteria enhance and accelerate these natural processes.

Will the algae come back after treatment?

If the underlying nutrient problem is not controlled, algae can return.

However, with regular bacterial use:

  • nutrient levels remain low
  • water stays balanced
  • algae recurrence is significantly reduced

This is a long-term solution, not a temporary fix.
