Why Pond Problems Suddenly Appear in Spring – and How to Get Your Pond Ready for Summer

Your pond looked fine all winter. So why is algae suddenly appearing? As winter ends, warmer water, longer daylight and nutrients accumulated during the colder months can quickly change the pond ecosystem and trigger visible algae growth.
What happens in your pond during winter?
Fish waste, uneaten food, fallen leaves, dead aquatic plants, dying algae and other organic debris continue to enter the pond throughout winter.
Because biological activity slows in colder water, some of this organic material can gradually accumulate between rocks, underneath plants, inside filtration areas and across the pond bottom.
Then spring arrives
1. Water temperature rises
Microbial and other biological processes become more active. Organic material that accumulated over winter begins to break down more rapidly, recycling nutrients through the pond ecosystem.
2. The days become longer
Spring brings longer periods of stronger sunlight. This is particularly important in shallow ornamental ponds, where sunlight can easily reach submerged surfaces and the pond bottom.
3. Algae responds
Case 1: When string algae suddenly takes over
One of the most common spring pond problems is string algae, also known as filamentous algae. Unlike suspended algae that turns the whole water column green, string algae grows attached to rocks, pond walls, pumps, aquatic plants and other submerged surfaces.


Case 2: The water is crystal clear — so what is growing on the bottom?
A second pond presented a very different situation. At first glance, the mature planted pond looked healthy and the water itself was crystal clear. Closer inspection, however, showed localized filamentous algae and a green-brown layer growing across rocks, plants and submerged surfaces.


The nutrients may simply be concentrated in biofilm, algae, plants and accumulated organic matter on the pond bottom rather than suspended in the water column.
Should we try to kill everything growing in the pond?
No. An outdoor pond is a living ecosystem, not a swimming pool. A thin layer of natural biofilm on rocks and submerged surfaces is normal and can form part of a healthy pond ecosystem.

Remove excess material
Physically remove heavy string algae, dead leaves, thick algal mats and loose organic sludge where practical.

For an active string algae problem, apply PurePond® Algae Blaster at the shock treatment dosage of 40 mL per 500 L of pond water. Allow approximately 7–14 days for the treatment to take effect and for the string algae to weaken and die back.
Remove dying algae
As the string algae dies and becomes loose, physically remove as much of it as possible. Dead algae still contains nutrients, and leaving large amounts to decompose can release those nutrients back into the pond and contribute to another algae cycle.
